Default Pontiac owner once again, '69 LeMans this time

Hi all,

Nice to be in the group. Sold my '67 Wagon Goat clone back in 2013, and couldn't resist the urge to get back into another project. Bought this '69 LeMans on ebay last weekend and I'm setting up delivery to my home in Reno, NV. This one apparently runs fine but is ready to be brought up to the next level. It's a 350/4 speed car, recent paint, no air or factory power anything. I'll be hunting a posi rear, power steering and most likely a bigger cube short block in the near future. Not looking to build it into a street monster, just a nice running '69 with an audible lope, street manners, no cooling issues and a respectable kick with the gas pedal. Some of you may remember me from the PSP page when I had my wagon. Couldn't seem to log in over there.

Cool...love the post cars. There is a post car(I think) in one of the early "Mad Max" movies. It's either a 68 (vent window) or 69 post.

This is what I was thinking.
Can't say I've ever seen a '69 Lemans in the post coupe body style.

For the performance upgrade you seek, it could probably be achieved with the right heads & camshaft on the 350. Is your car a factory 4-bbl?

(anyone) Didn't PMD produce a H.O. 350 for a few years in the late sixties?

Hey Vid. PSP was getting spammed bad in the last week. Bill put new registrations on hold till he could work out the bugs. Try again, maybe in a few days.
I remember when you sold that wagon!

OH! Just realized your problem! The site was updated a few months back. I bet you logged into the old site. Try this page instead.

Lightfoot...Pontiac did indeed have a 350 HO in 68 and 69. The 69 used #48 heads but they may have actually had slightly smaller combustion chambers.

Thanks for the compliments! Funny, a friend of mine on Oceanside, CA who is also a very knowledgeable Pontiac enthusiast immediately made the same comment about it possibly being a Custom S. It was sold to me as a LeMans, but from what I understand so far is that the Custom S was a trim level between Tempest and LeMans, and it had the wing window in '69 while the others ditched it. I'm very curious about it! The car is in the process of being shipped so I will definitely dig deeper into the mystery when it arrives. Unfortunately it's coming from a "non-title" state (Rhode Island) so any car older than 2000 doesn't get an updated title, only a registration form. The title would maybe have helped decipher the mystery?

Unfortunately this has a very mild 350, seller claims it's the original motor with a 2bbl carb. I wish it was the HO!

Thanks for the reply. My first step is to do nothing but drive it around for a week or two and see which things surface as "urgently needed", and go from there. I wondered if these little 350's can run decent or should I just hunt something 400 or larger? I'm thinking a RAIII cam repop would be nice with the Muncie, and add some gear, and, and, and... LOL

Vid, about 35 years ago a friend of mine gave me a 350 2bbl out of his 69 Lemans convertible and that engine code turned out to be XS. If you don't know what that is...in 66 and 67 Pontiac used that same code for the very rare and very desirable Ram Air HO 4 Speed cars...fewer than 700 produced. Yes the 350 can be made to go quite well and with that engine code it'll look cool too.

Nice car, I was eyeing that one myself when it was for sale.

The official name in 69 Pontiac land for that bodystyle was two door sport coupe with bodystyle code being 27. (a little confusing since Chevy liked to call hardtops sport coupes).

That bodystyle was offered in three A body models; the low level Tempest (33), the mid level Custom S (35) and the higher level LeMans (37). The GTO was offered in this bodystyle in 64-67 and 72 but not from 68-71.

Total production of the 27 bodystyle was about 30,000 in 69. Most were Tempests (17,181) then 7,912 Custom S's and only 5,033 LeMans'. However it seems that most of the ones you see today are not Tempests (I guess the low end ones were more likely crushed).

All three models were identical mechanically with a 1bbl OHC6, three speed manual on the tree, no power assists and dogdish hubcaps. The differences was in decor and trim.

All had identical grilles and front end. The Tempest had non concealed wipers, two spoke basic steering wheel and very basic decor moldings and cloth bench seat and no carpet. The Custom S netted vinyl trim upholstery, a bit fancier door panels, carpeting and a three spoke deluxe steering wheel. The LeMans added wheel opening moldings, lower rear rocker moldings, chrome trim on the edge of the deck lid, fancier taillights, a fancier interior (identical to the GTO with the Y pattern seats and door panels) with either buckets or a bench with a folding armrest and pedal moldings.

From what I recall your car was a LeMans. Easiest way to know for sure is the VIN. Second and third number should be 37, 35 or 33 (see above).

btw, that 350 with a manual is quite rare. They bolted about 180,000 of those 250-265 2bbls into A bodies but only about 6,900 were manual trans. And I'd imagine that most of the 7,000 manuals were either the 3 on the tree or three on the floor.

Thanks for all of that great information North. VIN says it's a 37. It's definitely got the Y pattern seats. First thing I'm looking for is if it's an XS code block.
Looking forward to it's arrival next week! C'mon delivery truck! LOL

The car arrived from Rhode Island yesterday. Without going into great detail, I'm very pleased with what I bought. As usual, there were a couple of unexpected uglies, nothing major, but overall it drives great and has the "bones" I wanted for my next project.

The motor is a WU block 350 with 47 heads, so unfortunately no HO 350 hiding under the hood. Runs great for a little 2bbl four speed car!

Interior for the most part looks terrific. Sits pretty too! Paint is a 6 out of 10 as expected.

It has some fairly minor electrical issues that will need sorting out, the instrument and radio area of the dash needs a LOT of restorative TLC, and it appears pretty much everything in the driveline that can leak is proving it (motor, manual trans and rear).

A week on the transporter during bad weather and I have some clean up to do today because it looks SALTY, LOL.
