Rear End Help

I have a 65 Lemans 10 bolt early 8.2 rear end with a 250 posi gear. I wanted to put a 390 gear in but the carier would take it so I need a carrier for a 336 and up but I have heard that they used to use a carrier spacer on them. Has anyone had any experience with these and what are the pros and cons?
