Default Where does this flap go?

One of our club members asked me where this flap he ordered went on his '70. Nothing like it on my '67 so I need help in letting him know where it fits.

Hate to be a pest, but does anyone have a pic or diagram of how it fits? I know the rectangular ones were also in his kit, and he got those figured out. He doesn't live close to me or I could go over there and help figure out where it goes.

Thanks guys, pictures really help. Figuring things out without pics would have been next to impossible.

I'm putting my inner fenders in and have repro shields but debating.

How hard are these to install?

How do you do it without the factory staple machine? Do you use staples by hand in the old holes or wire or ???

Sounds tedious to me but obviously others have done this and may have shortcuts.

If I choose to put this off, can they be installed in the car or is it necessary to put the shields on before installing the wheel wells?

thanks,

Mike

I clamped the rubber seal to the inner fender matching the outline of the old seal. I then drilled through the rubber using the original staple holes as a template..
I was able to use original staples and tapped the staple legs over with a small ball peen hammer and body dolly against the staple body.
Although I've seen them stapled in both directions, the majority have been inserted from the engine side and the legs on the wheel side.

Much easier with the inner fender off the car

Thank you OG68!

I have the originals with most of the staples so I'll follow your lead.

Drilling through the original holes to pre-mark and puncture the flaps is the help I needed.

I gave up on the original staples. They are just too strong to fold over easily- honestly like music wire! I used them on the first top "rectangle" shield but was scratching the paint off the inner fender and "just say no" kept ringing in my ears.

So don't tell anyone, but I used 3/8" T-50 staples and called it good enough.

I did re-use the original bottom shields because the repro material wasn't as strong and the ones I bought years ago weren't even cut right.

The original material is reinforced with woven fiber, like thick thread. The repro stuff may be fine but isn't reinforced.

Here are the wrong staples screaming "not correct" at you:

Here's the repro vs original shape comparison. Maybe I bought them for the wrong car or different for AC or ???? It doesn't matter as my originals were good enough for me.

You can also see the difference in material. No fiber in the larger repro:

Onward..

Mike

I replaced the control arm covers but like you, I kept the original rear covers. Scrubbed them down with Simple Green and reinstalled. Looks like new.

Yeah, the staples require a lot of patience to tap them back in place
