Default GreatRace Finale

Laura and I went to Greenville, SC last Sunday to see the participants in this year’s race cross the finish line. Very interesting and enjoyable day. Lot’s of human interest stories among all these folks. Four young guys who were in tech school together entered a 53 Pontiac in one of the divisions and won! Grand prize winners were two young sisters from Newnan, Ga in a fender less deuce Ford who took home $50,000!!!!

That 53 is awesome. Love the color and the general appearance with the stickers.
I live about 10 miles from Newnan. Very cool! Thanks for the pics.

Participating in the Great Race has been on my bucket list for quite a few years. Last time I looked at it the price of admission was pretty high, and there was a waiting list. They have a rookie class but it seems the same people finish in the top year after year. I suppose once you figure out the system it becomes a bit easier. Congrats to the young ladies that won, I think their mother is a previous winner.

Well that gives a whole new meaning to chasing the ladies, they came through Beckley WV, I missed my chance.

Hats off to the guys in that 53, always good to see the younger generation involved, especially in a Pontiac.

Thanks for posting, very cool, I took a look at the details, - https://www.greatrace.com/route

I passed the guys in the 53 on I85 on my way home from Charlotte the other day. Saw a couple other competitors as well. Very neat to see the young people particpating.

That would be something I’d like to do. I’d like to build my own car, though, something maybe fro the 30’s.

This is a bit harder than keeping your car running. NO Electronics Allowed. ZERO. You time yourself based on watches, known distance, accuracy of your speedo AND Odometer.. a co pilot is a must. I talked at great length with folks in New Scotland that had just run this up through New England. I was surprised at the system they developed and Stuck with it.
Map, compass, stop watch....... no Loran, No GPS. Its a mental test as well as driving consistently test.
Fun to watch .

Default Great race finale

I discussed the navigator’s role with one of the guys from the 53 Pontiac. He showed me the driving instructions from the final day that they had just completed. Very very specific and detailed. The speedometer they installed cost $1000. There was some kind of conversion chart they use in certain situations, etc., etc. Clearly this is no joy ride across America, and no time for sight seeing. Here are a couple of pics of the team from Finland and their 1916 American LaFrance fire chief’s speedster featuring dual chain drive and a 9.5 liter engine(driver said this was close to 700 cubic inches. Four straight head pipes about 18 inches long. This damned thing was loud! These guys were having a blast everywhere they went.
