Default Oil filter housing gasket

May seem like a stupid question but what are the differences between the open gasket and these solid gasket with the oval hole in it? I've always used the open gasket but I see they do make the other one that sometimes comes in the kits and I don't know when you ever use that.

Default I think that one is for the adaptor that is used with long-branch manifolds

It spaces the oil filter out from the block and rotates it so it points to the rear and clears the manifolds.

Good luck!

These the two gaskets I was referring to. When do you use one over the other?

Default We always use the open one when there's NOT an adaptor between the housing and block

So if your oil filter housing bolts directly to the block, I'd use the open gasket.

I think the one with the slot goes between the adaptor and the filter housing, although the open one would probably work fine there, too.

It would be interesting to know why the two gaskets are included since it seems that either one works. I prefer the gasket with the most meat since it seems that it would be less likely to rupture between the in and out ports.

I'm thinking that I looked into that deal a decade ago, and determined that it depended on WHICH oil filter adapter it was being used with.

Seems to me that some adapters were cast with openings that would leak from inlet passage to outlet passage if the wrong gasket was used, oil could bypass the filter.

But this is very fuzzy.
