Thumbs up Paul Sandoval 488 build

Thought I’d share my Paul Sandoval 488/494 build with you all, as there isn’t a lot of info about him here,
And MYGOAT’s build from Paul, has certainly made for an interesting thread read.
I too am down under and wanted a turn key, dyno’d engine.

400 XX Block, bored to 4.180’’.aligned and decked .0005’’ clearance
Fully Balanced and blueprinted
4 Bolt Mains
Canton road race oil pan
Cloyes billet timing set
Tomahawk push rod cover
4.5’’ Forged Eagle Crank
6.8’’ Forged I Beam Rods
D.S.S Premium Forged Pistons 6150X
Sandoval Stage 4 roller cam 246/252@.050’’ .400’’ lobe lift on a 112 LSA
Kauffman D-Port 310cm Alum heads
Comp Cams Roller lifters
Crower SS rockers 1.5.1 ratio
Ported Performer RPM Intake
SMI Quadzilla Q-jet 900CFM

I set, Paul the task of getting as close to 600hp with a Q-jet and dual plane intake, he made 570hp / 642 lb/ft
Not too shabby at all, and with a single plane and Holley we probably would have made 600hp.
But with the torque I ended up with, who needs another 30hp?
I had no interest in vacuum, as I run a hydraboost, but believe it makes around 12-15

Car idles at 750rpm and has a beautiful lope to the idle, I was worried that a 112 LSA would not sound tough enough, but how wrong I was!

I'll add a link to a clip we took when I first fired up the engine, when I get home tonight.

Big torque and over 550hp from 4800 up will be a lot of fun. AFR is consistent but maybe a little lean. Some thinner secondary rods could add a bit more power.

Yes it was a little lean, carby was originally set up for a 461, which the engine was going to be, but we ended up with the bigger stroke, and a 494 cubes.
I had a lot of pinging issues over here at the start, which ended up mainly being the carb too lean at WOT, Paul has since had
Sean Murphy build a new qjet to suit, and sent it over, once I installed it, lean issues were gone!

I'm sure it's probably not cool, and you don't have to answer by any means, but I'm curious what kind of dough it takes to make that kind of power?

Good stuff:

Couple of questions:

Are the main caps splayed caps?
Tell us about the decision making re the cam - did u consider an lsa of 114. Is that a hydraulic roller cam?
Are you running a vacuum pump?

I've got a 488 SB that I need to assemble some time and am not sure what cam to use and I really don't wanna run a vacuum/pump set up. (I do have a spare 252/262 HR at 114 - i think that's to big)

Very nice. Those cubic inches and 112lsa really smooth out the big cam but it still sounds mean as heck. I read back up several times and do not see compression ratio.

That depends on your goal and combination.
Do you want to run 10s or?

No, I don't believe the main caps are splayed , their Pro Gram Engineering P400C
Yes it is a roller, I was wanting a 110lsa as my last engine had this, , I left the cam choice to Paul, this many cubes was outta my league and well..... he is the one to know what works!
No vacuum pump, but if I had room I would run one, I have a serpentine set up with A/C and haven't seen any pumps that will fit with A/C.

Is my wife around.....budget for at least $12,000, then add the fuel upgrades, accessory upgrades, drivetrain upgrade, transmission upgrade, oh and tires, lots of, bloody hell it never ends.

Ozzman,
Very nice build, I just finished a 463 that was a solid 500hp/560tq, your 4.5 inch stroke good heads and roller cam certainly take it to the next level.
Enjoy the new bullet

First of all..That thing sounds mean in the video!

Is the first quadrajet the one that was on the engine in the dyno pull?

Dyno sheet showed HP was still climbing at 5,500...So what kind of red line did your builder set for this beast?

Clay

Another example of stopping a dyno pull short ? If so it's unfortunate in my opinion. It's nice to know where a combination makes peak power at.
That said, nice combination !
