Default Voltage Regulator

I think my voltage regulator is on it's way out on my Can Am.The next question is where is it? I know it's not on the back of the alternator, I've checked and it's not there. Is it hiding in plain sight? Thanks Mark

Lightbulb

It's inside the alternator. The two prong connector plugs into it. If you have the original casting, I would have a local auto-electric shop rebuild it.

Wink Sorry for font size - used due to previously posted large image

If can be verified only malfunction is voltage reg, I'd buy new voltage regulator and brushes, and replace them myself. It's an easy simple workbench project requires only simple hand tools and a paper clip to hold brushes in place for reassembly.

Here's a video of an later model 1996 rebuild that is the same basic procedure* http://youtu.be/LdFA6WF8lVg

*I have NEVER had to replace a rectifier bridge on any of my PERSONAL GM Alternators...contrary to this repair techs advice. Your results may vary.
Tip: You do not need to completely tear down or "field strip" the alternator to replace Voltage Reg & Brushes as shown here.

EDIT: Here's a handy repair manual the I've used for years for various repairs - MOTOR AUTO REPAIR MANUAL 1978 - if you don't have one suggest you consider adding one to your library.
It has professional photo & text step-by-step repair procedures including the EXACT alternator & starter used on your CA.

Here's a website I've never purchased from nor am affiliated in any way (providing for you for your own FYI and research**): http://alternatorparts.com/

**Agree w CanAmMan - you're gonna have it rebuilt by others, I'd use a local shop that will reuse the original case. And stay "Stock, Stock, Stock, OEM like component replacement - no "trick parts"

Glad to assist - keep us posted on your findings and repair.
FWIW - I purchased my MOTORS manual @ a "Half Price Books" local used book store.
