I don't know if it's a new trend or not...bigger vehicles have always been better for scrapping since they have more metal. According to the article, the problem in New York state seems to be a result of lax titling requirements.

I try to buy a 1970 Catalina sitting at a vacant property around the corner from me and the guy won't sell it. I few months after i talked to him the car was stolen and taken a a scrap yard but the theives were caught before the car was crushed. Then the Catalina was put in a barn on the property and it burned down 3 months ago. It's a damn shame as it was a 2 door and a fairly clean car.
