Default Cam change

I would like to change out the cam in my 66 GTO. It has a 66 B body Catalina engine and 091 heads. I replaced the 2 bbl intake and carb with a 66 4 bbl intake and Carter AFB carb. Would changing out the cam help with performance? If so which one should I use, and can it be replaced with the engine in the car? Would a change in cam have a negative effect on the current lifters, rocker arms, and push rods?
Thanks.

I believe it's a low compression engine.... correct?

I've got a '68 400 low compression XX in my 66 right now. I wish I could tell you what the cam is Charles but there's no name or part numbers on it. It's pushing 400hp right now and burns 87oct with no problems. I believe it could run the 1/4 mile and do well over 100mph. But I'm not gonna run it to break it just find out.

So to answer your questions from my perspective.. you should be alright changing he cam and get more HP out of it. But if I were you, I'd pull the engine and check the internals to see if they're ok. Bearings, cylinder walls, rods, pistons, heads and valve train, plus the oil pump should be looked at and checked. Just changing the cam could run you into a bunch of headaches, and loss of money with a blown engine.

Put the factory 068 cam in it.

No need to change anything in the valvetrain when using a mild factory performance cam.

It can be changed with the engine still installed in the car.

Changing the cam will definitely help with performance, it will work well with the 4-barrel carb upgrade.

You must use new lifters with the new cam, a new timing chain set is also needed.

If the engine is otherwise healthy you should be good to go.

X2. Very popular cam. Edelbrock makes it.

Ive seen the Edelbrock Performer cam (same as Summit 2800), the Torker cam (almost identical to the Summit 2802) and the Edelbrock Performer RPM cam (copy of the RAIV 041 cam) but no cam that is the equivalent of the 068, the 068 would fit in between the Perfomer and Torker cams.

Best place to get a 'true' 068 cam would be from Autozone by special order, the Mellings SPC-7.
