Another Nitrous Question
Finally made a pass on the nitrous with the new combo and i only pulled 4 degrees of timing on a 250 shot not on purpose though. My engine seems to be running fine so far,but my question is why didn't it burn the plug tips with so little timing out of the motor? My fuel pressure was 5.8lbs flowing. Also my trans. lost 3rd gear on that pass.I contacted speedtech and was told the reason it didn't hurt any parts is because the trans. didn't go to 3rd gear and there was no load on the motor. This doesn't make any sense to me so could somebody help me to understand this better. The plugs are ngk-10.
Thanks |

they are kinda correct..ngk-10s are cold cold..but we need more info on your combo..somes folks pull no timing at all til over 200 hp..engine size and speed also play a part..

428 .30 over,e-heads,ross pistons, eagle rods,251/263sr 112ls,950hp carb, victor intake,1.5rr,msd ignition,3.73,28/10.5 tire,400thm footbrake.I shift at 5400(streetcar)and the car went 6.34 at 105 1.32 60'.My goal is 6.00 if i can get it with this combo.Ken K. told me to pull 7degrees and start reading plugs but i forgot to pull the additional 3.Speedtech recommends pulling 9 degrees and when i pull that much it only picks up 4.8 tenths on 250 hit. This is a 9.7:1 motor and i run 110 octane when spraying.
Thanks Again |

The reason you didn't take the tips off is the cold plug you are running. A warm plug with destroy quicker and a cold plug will just foul out or pull the piston top easier.
That compression with 110 might not require as much timing pulled out. Like any combo. Work with what your combo likes and don't worry about other combos using the same jet. Lot of factors involved. Yes a load is harder on it. Look at all the distruction that seems to take place on the top end. That and why a lot of tracks are going 1/8th mile. Less load and pull resulting in less track cleanup. Where was the burn pattern (color change) on the ground strap after that run? What did the porcelin look like down in the plug? This is what is important. |

You still should see a burn pattern on the ground strap. This can tell ya something about timing and your pass.

You need to shut the car off going through the traps and then take an otoscope and look at the base of the plug to find the fuel ring, or just cut the threads off to see it. Looking at the porcelin will not tell you if you are fat or lean.

The ground strap can tell heat in the engine and timing That's what he was asking in his initial thread and pulling timing out. NGK and carbon down the outside threads can tell proper heat range. Has nothing to do with lean or fat. I didn't ask him that. |

Yes, the electrode is for proper timing.
