Default Valve Springs

I am needing some information on which valve springs will be best for my application. I have a 1968 pontiac gto with a 400. It is currently an automatic and will be driven as an automatic for about a year, but will be a 4 speed in the future(I have most of the parts collected). It is non A.C., I have an edelbrock intake, edelbrock 750 carb, Summit K2801 cam (summit recommended a crane single spring, which I have heard is junk (#28308-1)), #16 heads, converted to the GM HEI. I am running taylor 8mm plug wires. I also have 3.36 gears in rear. I will be using the car as a street driver that will see a few car shows. I don't want to buy some $200-$300 valve spring kits. My stock ones are weak and I would prefer to go with stock springs again. I saw year one had some valve springs (part #VS6658) However, it shows it for Automatic Transmission. Did they install different valve springs for manual cars? Also, since I got a bigger cam, would it be a good idea to run the H.O. valve springs from year one (Part #AB73) Any ideas. thanks, Justin

I would use the Crower 68404 springs. They are a good quality, dual spring, designed for the Pontiac stock installed height of 1.600", used by a lot of engine builders. They are also good for 0.550+" lift, if you decide to upgrade to a higher lift cam. There were minor differences in manual/auto engine valve spring specs, but the 68404's will cover a wide range of street cams.

Default crower springs

I saw a set of crower springs (68404) from summit for $133. not bad, but I will still probably have to purchase retainers ($66) plus valve stem locks ($45). Or will the stock retainers and valve stem locks work? probably not, but I thought I would ask. thanks, Justin

Yes, stock retainers & locks will work with the 68404 springs.

Like Geoff said, the stock retainers and locks work with no problems. BTW, I've ran 0.560 lift with 68404's and stock retainers/locks for awhile. I believe coil bind on those springs is rated to 0.950. Bryan
