I spent ALL freakin day trying to get this DAM# motor in today. Here are my woes so far....

Jack motor up and down & up down & up down, pry on new poly mounts more then more and then more....I am dying here...give up on that.

Trip to autozone. Get Anchor - Indian made motor mounts pn 2387. With much prying get 1 bolt in, the other no way in hell. Oh yeah spent like 2 hours prying on those... "This is fun!!!"

Take minute to contemplate suicide... think screw that I want to go ahead and die in this thing than go out the panzy way. Take motor out.

Slot mount holes up and down about 1/8 in, think should be enough more like pray.

Morning tasks, take big fat dump (won't have time to tommorow), think about humping wife (realize don't have time) then wait on buddies to show. Begin by placing headers (damn those are going to be a tight ass fit, drop in motor and pray have enough slack in mount holes now to fit em.

Question: I would like to use the poly ones, can I chop those little bars off on the outside of em?

Pray with me...

Chris

BTW Is this what your clutch/zbar bracket looks like? It only fits in 2 holes on my frame...and there is not enough room behine it to fit the nut from the ball swivel...

Thank God I'm not the only one that has days like that. It ALMOST makes you want to quit working on cars, but that is why not just "anyone" can own cars like these... I keep that in the back of my mind and sometimes that helps. ALWAYS good to take a break now and then...EASIER said than DONE, I know. Good Luck, it will work out.

Been there. More than once wanted to take either my '71 LeMans or the '68 EFI GTO and push it into a field and set it on fire.

The last time we had the motor out of the EFI car, it took us 10 hours to get the motor back in. Yes - 10 hours. And on top of it, nothing was changed. The same motor and trans had been in and out at least 5 times before, no problem. Just could not get the motor and trans to line up. Finally pulled the whole she-bang out. Figured with then motor and trans out and on the floor, we could finally find the problem.

Well of course they slid right into place. 15 minutes later both were in the car and the headers were going in.

To this day we still don't know what the deal was.

crossbreed 455 - yeah those are the original brackets drilled out to accept the poly inserts. Thing is they looked just like my other rubber ones. The "New" Korean made ones look so cheap...you can almost stick your finger on either side of the rubber. Seems like its setup to tear and screw up.

Going to cut the ears off... wish me luck round 2 is about to begin!

What I find absolutley hysterical about stuff like this is that people will tell me that the Indian Adventures mounts are too expensive, so they'll buy the cheap POS ones and then spend two weeks getting them to work instead of just spending the extra $10 for ones that fit right.

Sorry you had bad luck. However, you will find after a few years of doing things like this that you really do get what you pay for....

chris, i see a problem with the attaching bracket to the frame for the z-bar.
the z-bar bracket is NOT positioned correctly!!
it looks as if you have drilled the holes in the frame in the horizontal plane.
The slot in the bracket should be facing up, not back towards the firewall.
also, from the looks of the pic with the bracket in hand, you will need to invert the bracket so that the angle is toward the firewall.

I used a die grinder with a stone bit on the engine mounts to trim just a tad off of the front of them to get the mounts to sit between the tabs on the poly mount.

Be patient, Grasshopper!

Ok it looks as if it will fit now, got the hooker headers in there to. But problems abound...

Had to remove oil filter adaptor - if you know all parts for remote filter please let me know.

The mini starter I got hits the Milodon pan...going to modify it by beating it in about 1/4 inch. And man to get it in b/t the headers and block is a feat. I doubt once I get it in there if I'll ever be able to change it w/o jacking motor up & removing that header...

Will take some more pics and try to post em tonight... call me if you have any advice! PLEASE

512-736-4457 I'll call you back so its on me...

Thanks,
Chris

I've always had a fight w/ at least one motor mount on Firebirds. Seriously thought about just centerlining the engine w/ assembeled mounts attached to the engine & welding the lowers to the K-member several times.

True true...sorry to hear that. That's 1 of the many reasons I decided to build mine. It definantely takes ALOT more time that I could be doing other things...IE kicking the dog, spanking wife, playing with kids, painting dash, fixing up guages... Funny thing there. I always think of kewl things to do and they always seem to get turned into reasons to work on the car.

Clarifcation on the last post I made where I mistyped "that was not hard"...IT WAS HARD AS H#LL TO GET THAT MOTOR IN THERE!

I have always built my own moters in the past as well, but there isn't a local shop capable of doing the machine work I needed this time. Jim, Rodney, and Mark have a great reputation & I decided to let the pros do it this time. I really shouldn't complain. The motor will be right when they are done, and I know they have had some personal things crop up to slow things down in the shop.
Honestly though, I'm glad the stabbing problem was yours and not mine. Been there before and feel for ya.
