Default Could a converter slip this much?

I finally got to the track this past Sat. I changed from 3.73 10 bolt to a 4.56 9" and went from a 3000 tight converter to a 4500 TCI converter. I had serious traction problems, but the car still 60' 1.57-1.58, vs a best of 1.63 before, ET was just a bit slower though and the MPH fell way off. The MPH was down about 3-4. Is it possible for the converter to slip this much in the 2nd and 3rd gears. Once the shift light came on it never went off, I couldn't even feel the shift changes.
Thanks.
Mel

Calculate the slippage! What RPM were you turning at the line? vs the MPH?

GEAR X MPH X 336= xxxxxxxx / TIRE HEIGHT= FULLY COUPLED RPM (Zero slippage) Now divide the fully coupled rpm by the observed rpm to find the coupling percentage. Subtract the coupled percentage from 1 to find slippage... Example below plug in your numbers...

4.56 X 115 X 336= 176198.4/ 28"= 6292.8 / 7000= .8989 So 1 - .8989= .1011 or 10.1%I've seen converters adding 30% slippage so anything is possible. JD

P.S. Thought for the day "Blowing through a cheap converter"!!! Not cost but quality...

Good luck to the new owner of the Ventura II! Sold the car after 13+ years. Look for it on the Hot Rod Power Tour in the future as it's currently being re-configured as a Pro-Touring ride!

I found that the continental 13 vs my TCI street fighter torq converter had about a 2-300 RPM difference at 55mph. The continental doesn't stall quit as high so I'm missing the torq but loving the tighter cruising ability. Sounds like you should be posting this in the race section.
