Regaurdless of rear end ratio, Does any one out there have experience with the Tremec tko600 Vs Richmond 5 spd? Building a nasty 428 that will be roughly 600ft lbs 550 hp buy a well know pontiac race engine builder. Help...

Get the TKO600 for that setup.

I have no specific experience with the Richmond box but did reseach the comparison before purchasing my TKO600.

Cost wise it's about a tie. The Richmond is slightly less for the trans itself but requires the purchase of either the Hurst shifter or Long shifter. Both over $300 with the long costing like $100 more. Both shifters are said to require cutting of the tunnel. If you are stuck with a 2.73-3.08 or so rear gear, the Richmond's gearing will work with that but so will the TKO500.

Fit, advantage goes to the Richmond as it's mount is the same distance as a ST10, same yoke, speedo cable and uses standard gear lube. The TKO is a tight fit in the tunnel and is significantly taller, longer and heavier. You will need to modify a stock or purchase a custom crossmember.

Shift quality, big advantage for the TKO with it's internal rail design. No adjustments and very few parts to wear. The Richmond box is notoriously poor shifting. Many send theirs back to Richmond who works some kind of magic and about 1/2 of them return super smooth while the other half return about the same as they were from the begining. I don't think Richmond picks up the bill for the shipping.

Torque capacity. Any box will break if abused but the Richmond has a lower first gear so it's torque capacity is limited by the distance between the input and idler as that sets the size of the gears you can run. Richmond rates their 3.27 geared 5 speed at 450ft/lbs. TKO600 is said to be rated at 600 ft/lbs. I'm skeptical but can agree that it likely has a higher torque capacity than the Richmond. Advantage TKO.

Service. There are several places offering installation kits, shifters and parts for the TKO. More choices are better than fewer. Advantage TKO.

For me, shift quality is a big deal, fabrication is not. The additional torque capacity and better access to service was icing on the cake and this choice was a no-brainer for me. When you get ready to buy, go here:

You can order a Richmond with various gear ratios increasing the torque capacity. I don't remember what broke but in the 80s a guy in the TA club here routinely broke his Richmond 5 speed behind a 455. But using a lighter flywheel, a centrifical assist clutch to slip a controlled amount until the rpm is up can all reduce shock to the drivetrain with a torque motor and a stick. If you are not using sticky tires that also helps.

Get the paint off that front bumper, for gawd's sake! You want someone to think you are driving a CAMARO or something?

Sheesh....
