Default 70 GTO Front Valance Installation Questions

I have a 71 Lemans convertible that I am putting a 70 GTO front on. I have been collecting everything I need for this part by part through ebay and craiglist and think I have almost everything.

I am a little confused how the front valance attaches. I know it attaches to the fenders on the outboard edges, but I don't know what happens in between. The picture below shows the back side of the endura bumper and the valance. I have attached the grill brackets to the bumper as shown, but I notice they have some extra holes (where the clip nuts are) on the bracket as they project below the bumper, what are those for? Do they somehow attach to the holes below in the valance, or are those just to attach the chrome trim?

I have seen this bracket being sold as a valance center support bracket, but it's not obvious to me how it attaches to the car and the valance.

In the area below the headlights I am also not sure what is supposed to happen here. I see some holes on the bottom of the headlight plate, what are those for?

And finally, I think maybe something is missing around the turn signal as it installs into the valance. My mockup is shown below.

I found the picture below on the internet, it appears like there is some type of body-colored bezel around the turn signal. I haven't seen anything like that sold either in catalogs or on ebay.

Any help or advice would be welcome, such as pictures during your construction or your completed car. Also, if someone could PM me the factory manual page for these areas that would be great too.

Thanks, Phil

Here's what you need around the parking lights:

Wish I could help with more of the install questions, but I don't have a '70 in the fleet anymore. I'm sure other '70 owners will chime in and help you out.

Hope that helps!

Eric,

Thanks for the link, obviously I didn't look hard enough through the catalogs. For anyone else who is following this thread, the OPGI parking light fillers are $46 but Ames has them for $27. I searched the PY catalog but couldn't find anything.

Mr. Wrestling,

Thanks for posting the picture of the factory manual. When I printed it out it was a little hard to read, is there anyway you could scan it again at a higher resolution (300dpi)?

Thanks,

Phil

PY
RH, RPF20, $27.00

LH, GMF21, $27.00. I'm sure both of these are reproductions.

That was scanned at 300 dpi. I rescanned at 600 dpi but can't upload the file. If you PM me your address I will email it to you.

you'll need a pair of these to hold it up nice and tight in the corners also, its hard to explain where they go and the picture accompanying the listing doesn't really show them very well but they kind of hook around a part of the endura bumper to hold the valance up nice and tight by the inner sides of the turn signals:

Held for Ransom & 428GTO70:

Thanks for the info on these brackets. I have seen these brackets in the catalogs and on ebay, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of info how to install them. Thanks for the description, I am pretty good at figuring things out so hopefully it all works out. All I need is these brackets, the fender to valance brackets, the center bracket, and the parking light fillers and I am good to go.

Phil

Do these work on 69 GTO's?

Seems like I have always seen them as specific for 70 but I could be wrong.

Is there an attachment going to the fender on the outboard edge of the valance (vertical portion next to the park lamp)? On the assemble drawing, it looks there is a line going through the hole on the valance and into the hole on the fender but I do not see how to install the fastener. Parking lamps out with a j nut on the fender part? Same screws as those that attach to the core support? I also assume the valance is installed after the bumper is installed and secure. Thanks for the help, Paul

Yes, there is a bolt that inserts thru the parking lamp opening that fastens into a clip on the fender.

On the rest in of your question, yes install and fit the bumper first then the valance.

I'd have to reference the assembly drawing to see if the bolt in question, that goes to the fender, is the same as the ones used for the core support. I believe the clips on the fender are a different style than the ones on the bottom of the core support.

MrWrestlingII, thanks for the input. It will make the reassembly much less stressful. I got the bumper painted this weekend and hope to get everything together this week. Paul

I got the valance installed this weekend and it looks great. Thanks for the help. The metal brackets in the pictures above were a real pain to install but well worth it. They keep the valance lined up well to the bumper.

The link says only for 70's

Just found this thread through the search feature. Now I know why my valance is a bit down on one side ... one of those clips is missing. Can't just go down town in OZ and pick one up and USA parts houses charge $40 postage to mail a bee's dick, so I'm going to make one.
