New to the forum and the OHC
Hello, In December I bought a 66 Tempest Custom Wagon with a OHC6.
Prior to that I had no idea that they even existed and have been trying to research and learn about the motor ever since. I'm diving right in and going to change out the timing belt, does anyone have any insight, is it pretty straight forward? What are the best places to buy parts i.e. new timing belt. Thanks in advance for any and all help. –*Mike |

Unfortunatly the only source of new Timing belts is Kanter and while I cringe at the $125.00 price (plus shipping) at least they stepped up and had the made when they went obsolete at the normal suppliers.
If you do change the belt I would suggest having the Accessory drive unit to block oil seals handy, 99% chance you will tear those seals when you loosen the accessory drive to replace the belt. On the new gaskets I coat them with Pam the spray on cooking anti stick spray so they don't stick to the block. Welcome to the site! Post some pictures of the Cammer wagon, they are rare cars as I believe the 326 2bbl was the standard engine on the wagons, and the OHC-6 1bbl was a credit option. Very few have turned up over the years. It is the 1 Body style of Cammer I have never owned. https://www.kanter.com/content/Ponti...ts_154715.html

Thanks for your response Jeff, after I posted a super nice guy by the name of Jerry Woodland gave me a call and chatted with me about the OHC and it turns out that he has them for around $60 and has them made from the original GM cast, but in any case he actually talked me out of doing a belt change saying that they pretty much never fail.

WELCOME glad you made it over.
This has become our home since YUKU screwed the pooch.
Jerry is correct. OIL is the #1 killer of belts and UV exposure. I've run OE belts for many miles...

I agree with Jerry, the only belt I ever had break was oil soaked from a bad front main oil seal (that was caused by the rings that failed in the #1 Cylinder) I was driving the car from San Diego CA to Michigan when the oil seal failed I had to add 2 qts of oil to the engine every time I stopped to fill up with gas. And when it broke it was not catastrophic as these are not interference engines in stock form.
I have seen the belts last 30+ years and over 100,000 miles. Glad to hear Jerry has a supply of new Belts, it is probably were Kanter gets them from.

Welcome and yes jump on in, the alligators here are friendly. This forum has been so so helpful to me, who is just handy with tools and have just enough talent to get me in trouble.
I never thought I'd be removing the camshaft cover let alone installing new seals and as Silver Buick says, grew less fearful and how to love the OHC6. (That may be misquoted but don't quote me on that) I love having something different under the hood that makes people stop and stare and then you see the light go off in some, not all, but to have a true piece of history and have it be 50 years old and running better than some 10 year old cars, well for me............if I have to explain how to love an OHC, you wouldn't understand.

Thanks everyone! In doing my research in getting to know this motor I've come across a bunch of really nice looking Cammers which has given me an itch to try to start cleaning up and painting mine. However when I went to remove the three large Philips head screws two of the three had been mistreated at some point and a bit stripped out. Does anyone have some for sale or have a tip on where to find replacements?

Unless you are a die hard original equipment person, I get most my hardware at Ace Hardware. Screws, bolts, nuts, studs, etc.

You have a better chance of hitting the Power Ball
If you have a FASTENAL in your area they should have or can get 5/16-24 SS Truss Head screws that are a suitable.

That's so weird, Jeff Hamlin. I had never heard fo Fastenal before two days ago and you're the second person in that time to mention them. One person was saying that they do shipping large stuff like motors cheap.

AMK makes good reproduction hardware, although their catalog is a bit cumbersome to search through...
