Default Drag strip requirement

I have read that I need a netural safety switch on my 1979 trans am with a four speed transmission to race at the local drag strip. Today I called the tech support at the strip and they told me on a standard it was not available on my car and is not required. Has any one had any experience with this in the past? I have been told that they did have a clutch switch but most broke over the years. Will they let me race on the strip. Reason for my question is that it is a 70 mile drive and don't want to drive that distance and not allow to run. Also it is a 1979 trans am with a 400 4 speed. I had it dynoed a couple of weeks ago an it produced 310 rwhp and 400 ft tq/ Any guess on an et. I was hoping for mid 13 ?

The track might let you go the first time, especially if its a test and tune but they"ll get you the next. If your car doesn't have one originally, (which it should) its easy to make one.

I raced a 4-speed GTO and a 4-speed Bonneville for years without anyone ever asking for a neutral safety switch. If the car didn't have one originally, it won't be required. Isn't that what the drag strip told you?

Yes it is what they told me at tech support at the drag strip on the phone. My concearn is that I think it did come with some type of clutch switch that would stop it from turning over with out the clutch in. Its a long drive to be told no when I get there. My feeling is he might have been wrong. Just wanted to see what other had run into.

My 1970 GTO four speed car required me to push the clutch in to start the car. If I remember correctly it was a law mandated starting in 1970.

You have a problem. Something is missing.

I agree with Ron. Dont trust the guy on the phone. Chances are he doesnt know what he is talking about. Tech inspectors can be a real pain. There should be a switch running off the clutch pedal. High up where it mounts. Easy fix.

OK, now I get it. Another reason to like the '66's. I had no idea such a thing existed before the nineties. I agree if your car came with it, you better have it.

Funny story about the 1970 GTO.

I had owned four speed cars before my 1970 GTO. When I took delivery of the car I thought the car had a problem. Before this car I would put the trans in neutral and start it....no problems. But my GTO wouldn't. So off to the dealer I went complaing about the car's apparent starting defect. The service manager told me to read the owners manual where I would find out that I had to push in the clutch to start the car.

If I remember correctly you had to have the trans in reverse to get the key out of the ignition switch.

Both my 69's had a clutch switch. When they broke we unplugged the switch and stuffed a jumper wire in it. Two big purple wires if I remember correctly

Well safety first but.. just go on a street night. You will never raise an eyebrow at that power level. Go have some fun.

was your car converted from auto to std?
mine was
autos had a column linkage that set the reverse and NSS
i finally hooked up the reverse lights on my car (off hand forgot the wire color under the dash/cloumn)
there is also a wire for the NSS as well

checkout the later 2nd gen tech section
i got a wiring diagram one time from there that listed all the wire colors
someone mentioned purple, which i think is right (been a few months since i looked at the diagram, i have it saved, just cant find it at the moment)

safety first....
however i've never heard anyone not be allowed to run because of it
if your brake pedal is good, and the car doesn't look like slop
you should be ok
you can always say waiting on a dealer part to come in
