Default Gaskets for intake/ported heads? 2 questions.

Issue #1 This is the first time I've used ported heads and was wondering what's out there for intake gaskets. I need a gasket that has more material around the outer edge of the intake gasket, compared to a stock one. I presume I'll have to trim them a little to match the port size/shape and I want to make sure I have good sealing for this street motor.

Issue #2 I discovered tonight. The intake manifold sits too low and you can see the bolt holes sit too low to work. A rough estimate shows about .080" shim lines everything up. Adding in a crush, we're probably looking at .100" thick gaskets? Is there such a gasket or should I consider getting another manifold?

I used Felpro 1233 gaskets. They worked great.

Regarding #2...you can double gasket. Did you check with the head gaskets in place?

Feel free to email me if you like to discuss...I am a bit familiar with this.

SCE make s a number of different gaskets. If you know your port entry size, you can call Spotts or others to get the correct gaskets based on port size...less trimming that way.

What heads do you have and what are the port openings? We are currently making our own intake gaskets (should have a complete set soon) with different intakes available. check out www.tinindianperformance.com/gaskets.htm We can pretty much make any port opening you want

Let me know if you need any other information.

Kev

I'm using the 2.32 X 1.18 gaskets from Kev @ Tinindian Performance. They are really nice, fit perfect and work great!

Port size: 2.312 x 1.187.

New wrinkle in my saga. The manifold was surfaced at a funny angle, with daylight at the bottom of the driver's side and daylight at the top of the pass. side. Rock it over to the passenger side and it fits fine. Nice, huh?

I nabbed an old Performer and set it on. Fits almost perfect. BUT, nudge the Performer slightly and the port roofs on the head start to show. It's real close. We shimmed it and .075-.080 looks right. Are they always that close to the edge with ported heads?

Are we (my dad and I) correct in figuring a thicker gasket will raise the manifold over the top of the port and help with sealing? If not, does the RPM manifold have more material around the ports to accommodate this?

Also, the top of the port openings have a dome shape instead of the stock flat shape.

Your replies have been very helpful so far. I'm open to suggestions for options.

2.312? Are they necked down? What number heads are they, and may I ask who did them? That's a really tall port for an iron head.

If you open the port that tall, you need to weld up and port the intake to match. Just lay a couple beads to add material at the sealing top edge, then start grinding.

They were done by West Coast Performance. The port roofs are domed in shape, not flat. That's what's screwing me. When the intake manifold is lined up, the ports don't show. Only when you move it slightly.

Are there gaskets that have extra material on the outer edge?

The heads are #96s. I bought 'em from a PY member, great guy! I just learned from him that they were milled .025" and my surface job added .004" = .029" Also, the intake, which was ported & matched to the heads, was cut .050 at an earlier point in it's life. AND, add to that a .015" surface cut on my deck!

Any math giants out there? I know I need custom pushrods, but that was part of the plan already.

Maybe I could find a Genie and have her twinkle her nose...

Make sure the bottom of the intake ports are not hitting the valley cover.

After using a .090-.100 thick gasket, I'm sure I'll be fine.

Im glad you solved it but _which_ gaskets did you find that thick or did you double up? We have a motor that needs the thick ones as well and its a pain to cut your own.

My welded Torker II I have a normal 0.62 on one side and 0.125 on the other, too lazy to have the machine shop mill the side for two .125s!
