Default How loud

I have recently been having discussions with my brother about what mufflers he is going to put on his car. He is changing the exhaust. I have had the same Flowmasters on my car for 10-12 years. They are 3 chamber 3" . I can't remember the series. Maybe 50 series. They are 19" long and 5" thick case mufflers. Exhaust is system consist of 2" MadDog headers with 3-1/2" collector. 3" exhaust with X crossover and mandrel bent tail pipes over the rear. I took decibel reading with an app I loaded on my phone. Here are my findings.

At Idle standing at the rear bumper. : 75
Standing 10' behind car. : 73
In the seat with door closed@idle.: 70
Standing at front bumper with hood shut :62

For reference I checked my 2004 F150. All stock with a 5.4 V-8.
Standing@ rear bumper. Engine running :43
Standing @ rear bumper engine off 30. ( just back ground noise from local neighbor hood road and wind)
Any else ever checked their car? Just wondering. I have thought many times about replacing the flowmasters to improve performance. But dont want anything any louder than these. And I do like the Floemaster sound.

Just keep in mind that since decibels are based off of a x 10 scale that even just a 3 Db drop in sound pressure is a big improvement in the precived loudness of a muffler.

That's 1 of the reasons I am reluctant to switch mufflers. I like the way Flowmasters sound.but have been told they are not the best for performance

I was surprised that the change was so minimal when walking away from the car.
