TH400 ID? Weird filter set up?
I'm trying to ID this TH400, far as I can tell it's Chevy 1968 but what is up with that filter and pick-up tube?

That's a TH350 filter. B&M used to offer a kit to adapt that style filter, know I installed a few in the early 80's along with deep GM TH400 pans.

That's the early style, early 67s still used them. Later units use the super-common broiler pan style.

I don't like that long pickup tube deal, as it likely does not stay primed well like a stock filter set up does.
I would be thinking about getting a stock pan and run a stock filter. The stock filter has a ton more surface area also!

1990 SS 454 Chevy trucks used an extended tube and a spacer for a deep pan/stock filter. Maybe there is something like that you can use.

Ah yes. The 5579822 1st type filter for early TH400. Just make sure the pan is also 1st type with the dimple and recess to space the pickup away from the stock pan.

Recommend as the Th400 filter of choice with brass screen. # 34010B High flow.

I too like the pan type filter with mesh screening.i avoid the pan type with paper like filter. I learned sometimes the paper filter will not 'suck' the tranny fluid.

While on the subject, can a 65 400 turbo use the later style filter ?

that mounting hole it's straightforward. Or use a later valvebody. |

Swapping valve bodies in T 400s can be dicey, although they look similar there are subtle differences in the OEM valve bodies that aeren't always compatible between other applications.
My opinion would be to drill the valve body you have, because I have seen the problems swapping them can create. I've used the early filter setups in high performance applications without any troubles, Just double O ringed the tube that goes into the case to safeguard against sucking air at the connection point, FWIW. |
