Lug nut torque spec.
I have rally one wheels on my 67 GTO. the 1967 service manual says the lug nuts should be torqued to 65 ft lbs. Me personally, I feel that's not enough, but torque specs are there for a reason.
I found paperwork from when the rally one wheels and center caps were ordered, and it says to torque all lug nuts to 75-85 ft lbs. My question is, what one should I follow, and why a 10 ft lb range? Thanks in advance for your help. |

It sounds like you have the reproduction Rally I wheels. You'll have to ask the vendor why they recommend a higher torque than factory. Stock wheels are 55-75 lb-ft. per the Assembly manual. The 10 lb-ft tolerance is to accommodate the torque tool and friction variation.

You have to remember Rally wheels were also available on the big cars. They had 1/2 inch studs and the factory only recommended 70-85 lb/ft to torque them.

Thread lubrication could account for the differences, too. Not sure if it specifies or is "asterisked", but it would make sense if it were 65 ft/lbs with light oil, vs. 75-85 for dry threads, for similar clamp loads.
