Default Fuel filler neck support?

I noticed a pair of holes in the trunk floor in the vicinity of the fuel filler neck (‘68). When I look online I see many trunk pics with apparently no holes in the floor in that location. It wasn’t easy but I did find a few with holes and one even shows a support bracket? Was this common?

Below are some pics I found with/without the bracket. The first 3 are actually from a Chevelle site. The next showing the holes filled with only nuts/bolts and washers was listed as a ‘68 GTO. The last pic was just a GTO with a new tank, probably new floor, and no signs of a support. The Any ideas?

Wondered about that too but it’s only catching sheet metal and nothing more. Was that typical back then? I guess I can just fill the holes in and be done with it. Thanks!

As I recall, they bolted to the trunk pan and the bottom of the bumper. Usually a little class 1 hitch. Enough to pull a small boat or U-Haul.

Haha thanks OG. Makes total sense now. I’m an idiot. Lol
Seems like this particular car never lived a pampered life... I found bullet holes in the quarter and now the trailer hitch.

Funny you show that pic of that box. My Dad had one just like that kicking around in our garage when I was a kid. Not sure what he ever put it on.

Thanks!
