You can gut the original and use 2 jumper wires on the inside of the connector blades. It will look like you're still using it. Wire jump 1 and 3, and then 2 and 4. Connect the alt regulator wires to the original wire set to the regulator and you're good to go. I can get you photos if you need them.
No more problems with the one on the firewall, and it will save money in the long run.
