Yes, auto trans car. I was able to do the job while he waited despite the fact that ALL the threads for the fuel filter housing came out with it! The carb had other issues from previous "tampering", which most folks call "rebuilding". The seal was off the pump and wrapped up on the return spring under it. Choke pull-off wasn't holding vacuum either. So between no accl pump and not unloading the choke of a cold start it was nearly impossible to start and difficult to drive. He'd been dealing with that at least 20 years, which probably kept the mileage down even more.........
