You'll need to have the engine, trans, rear end all at operating temp to get the fluids (oil) at the proper viscosity (thinner). Also, the pistons (forged) and rings will expand (seal) at the proper operating temp, giving you more power as they seal. You want to have heat in the engine enough to have good ring seal but, at the same time, have the induction system cool to add a more oxygen rich air/fuel mixture.
