I believe you're correct, being patient is one thing. This is somewhat beyond that. He has your money and should know to look for and respond to communications.
I'm not sure what good contacting the authorities would do, but I'd be inclined to give it a shot....since you aren't local.
Maybe somebody on here will step up and be able to contact him or provide you with information on his situation or whereabouts.
If a man's word is no good, there is a problem somewhere. No matter how small the amount.
