The HydraMatic from the '55 Pontiac will be what is called a "slant pan". It is clocked about 15 degrees (CCW looking from the rear of the car) on the bellhousing to make room for the transmission linkages in the 55-56 Pontiac X frame. 99% of the internals are the same, but getting the truck linkage hooked up to the tranny might be a trick.
I hate to sound like such a downer on this project. I just don't want you to run up against a wall you can't get over at some point down the line.
