Default Fuel problems after Tanks, Inc install

Couple months ago I installed the Tanks, Inc EFI tank with GPA-4 pump. The system has Earl's super stock 1/2" (-8an) to the regulator and from the regulator back to the tank. The regulator is an Aeromotive 13301 return style with a fluid filled gauge installed on the regulator. There is a Mallory 140 canister filter on the supply side. The rest of the specs on the car are in my signature.

The unit seemed to work OK when the temps were cooler after I first installed it. It is warmer this week (around 70 today) and the car now has a horrible bog/fuel problem. If I mash the gas it will go hard then bog at top of first or bottom of second gear. If I keep my foot down and pump the gas I can sometimes revive it after it coughs, gags, then blows black smoke and goes -- otherwise it dies. To get it restarted the throttle must be held wide open and crank it a bunch. I have noticed gas puddle in the air cleaner base after this happens.

I have tried a variety of pressures on the gauge from 3-9psi. It seemed to work on 7psi ok when I first installed the unit. The pressure gauge is very temperature sensitive and it is difficult to get an accurate reading, esp at temp. I improved the vent today per the instructions(pictured). Also yanked the carb today (800 qjet by Cliff) and it looked fine inside. The Mallory filter had some junk in it but nothing major. Carb filter looked completely clean. Prior to the tank change (running a mallory 140) I had absolutely NO fuel issues and that was with a 3/8" return line. Very frustrating!

So, where to go from here? Any ideas?
