I have a shaker hood scoop molded onto my fiberglass hood. From a distance going down the road it looks somewhat factory:

My air cleaner assembly goes up inside the hood scoop. With a HP950 carb I used a Victor intake with a K&N 9-inch diameter filter that was 2.875" tall and with it the 9-inch diameter X-stream filter top. In addition I had the Victor intake carb flange milled down 0.650" for extra clearance. On my 505 dyno testing indicated the milled intake gave up about 8-10 HP at peak power rpm. With 660 HP I was not worried about the loss ! For track use, just remove the air cleaner.
Butler has done the same on a 535 combo on a Victor intake for use on a functioning shaker assembly, it gave up about 15 hp on the dyno.

This all said, I run Edelbrock cylinder heads. Not the taller HP heads.

(Since then I have converted to direct port fuel injection. With the throttle body in place of the carb the air cleaner assy still goes up inside the scoop.
