Then started retarding the timing and every bit that we took out made it faster and easier on pistons. When the pistons were happy, the color was at the base of the ground strap.

I have seen a lot of engines killed by 1 degree too much timing and a lot of very fast engines (with happy pistons) when the timing was a lot less than what many thought it should be.
I have seen a several boosted engines make excellent power with less that 10 degrees of timing at max boost and max rpm.
