Shaker455 is a true carb whisperer and I am grateful for his help.
I just finished the rest of my changes, static-timed the engine, poured some gas in the carb vent and it fired right up. It quickly settled into an idle for the first time EVER.
He found a vacuum leak at the APT screw and added bypass air. I'm not sure about other tuning but I'm truly excited to have the engine idling.
I shut it down to address a gas leak at the pump and there's lots to do.. a noise I don't like, yada yada, but...
