The inner retainer ring is almost the same diameter as the race, one of them must have caught the lip of the race and pulled it part way out when I removed the axle.

The pictured bearing is a set 9 factory type bearing which is a tapered roller , the race has pulled apart and is still in the axle tube most likely from the retainer as you mentioned. The bearing retainer is also the original. When I pulled the axles from the 71 Skylark 8.5" that I bought for my LeMans They looked the same.
