I'm liking the "cast iron" look .. went through my unmolested car photos and I'm seeing mostly a gray/natural/cast look. Remembering my GTO when I got it 46 years ago .. they definitely were not BLACK at the point I got the car, at least not a black you could clean up and they would look black. They were a medium gray, probably a phosphate coating that had grayed up after years of exposure.

As easy as these blasted, and considering the lack of rust I'm thinking what I'm seeing is mostly the original phosphate coating with natural metal showing through due to blasting. Only places there was some rust was the springs (which usually can't be phosphated because it compromises the metallurgy of the spring), and areas that were abraded by something which would have worn through the oxide coating.

They are too big for my manganese phosphating setup, so I think they are going to end up sprayed a cast iron'ish gray, or just oiled up and left as is.
