When I did mine I just drilled one hole in the middle of the gear. I thought about doing one 1/2" down from the top and 1/2" up from the bottom on the other side but never did.
Makes it a little lopsided but if you drill one on the other side it will still be lopsided as you can not do them 180 deg off.
