Don't think that engine came in a flat hood '72 Bird.
Just looked it up on nhra site and it shows 300 hp 455 non ram air firebird
he's good to go. The hood is a good way to slow it down know and protect the lower hp engine for when he needs it that thing is still fast even at 352 hp.

Yeah, the Class Racer Info site shows that a 455HO non-RA engine is factored at 335hp in a '72 Formula & T/A.

According to this site, the 455HO is the only legal 455 in a '72 Bird. And those are not legal in a base model or Esprit--only the Formula & T/A.
In fact, this site shows that no 4-barrel engine is legal in a flat hood '72 Bird.
