I didn't know about the M1A/M14, but I have read about the M1 Garand and carbine stockpile. Apparently importation cleared Congress in 2012, but the State Department blocked it, and the State Department's move was backed up by Executive Order. Write your Congress person. Hopefully this should change.
It seems ridiculous that US made rifles must face a bunch of import restrictions for what are essentially historical relics and collector pieces.
A Garand is what I would be after. Love their history.
