Yes, the pawl should drop in when internal fluid pressure drops when the engine stops. Pawl is spring loaded. If you turn off the engine with the shift lever not in reverse you should be able to push the truck by hand. While moving slowly put the shift lever into reverse. You should hear the clunk of the pawl and the truck should abruptly stop.

Works best with the driveshaft in place!
