68ragtop here are possible production numbers for the Y82, Y84 and Y88 W72 automatic cars. Based only on percentages and no way known to be accurate. The only known production number to be accurate is total of 21,384 Trans Am and Formula W72 automatics.
1978 W72 Automatic Production - 21,384
1978 Y82 W72 Auto - 814
1978 Y84 W72 Auto - 20
1978 Y88 W72 Auto - 1,858
1978 Base Trans Am W72 Auto - 17,426
1978 Formula W72 Auto - 1,266
Again, I stress these are NOT confirmed to be accurate but only possibilites based on percentages.
Skip I would like to know when you ordered your 1978 Trans Am. It would help establish time frames. According to Pontiac documents, the actual cut off date for cutomer orders was March 20, 1978. All customer orders must have been preferenced prior to that date.
