My Crane hydraulic roller lifters have the good rectangular-section rings. They darn well better, at $430 from Summit! Haven't looked at many hydraulic lifters in recent years. Forty-five years ago, all hydraulics had round-wire retainers. But they weren't a problem unless some other part failed- like a bent pushrod, allowing the lifter plunger to hit the retaining ring. Even then, I personally never had one come apart- just beat up the ring and its groove.
