Dirk,
Go for the 400. There is no subsitute for Cubic inches. Use all the bracketry from the 71. Check the 400 block and make sure that it has all 5 mounting holes on each side. ( some only had 2 I have seen some).
I would first rebuild the 350 trans W/shift kit. This is the easiest way. Using the 400 requires another driveshaft and yoke. Also you need to wire a kickdown switch
like the GTO. Plus the 400 should be of the long tail variety not short like the GTO.
The Heads should be of the 6X variety giving you bigger valves and screw in studs.
