Bunch of after market rods are made like that. And the wide side/narrow side isn't consistant in a set of rods. Looks wrong when they're installed right.

Been talked about before on here

This would be my first guess also. And...

And warped/bent valves is what closed the plugs.

For a first time build... Improper install of the fuel pump eccentric would be highly suspect. Unless...
