I don't think countersinking the thrust surface will work. The grinding wheel will still have to clear the counterweights when grinding the thrusts.

Concerning the balance, I'd check and correct...

MisterP, you and me both. Worked at a GM dealership when 5.7s diesels were dropping like flies. Olds Cutlass' with AC were the worst to change head gaskets in. Think I got paid 5 hours to do both...

Ferrea 5000 series valves are very good valves for the money and great for builds like yours. I've run them with mild solid rollers and had no issues.

The problem I can see is the stuff that desolves calcium deposits & alum. oxide is the same stuff that desolves aluminum radiators. Anode rods are supposed to prevent the problem.

Wonder what the purpose of the two speed Ford-o-matic? They weren't anything special although lighter than most cast iron trannys of the day.

Many SBC have a thin area in #8 at the back side. The edge looks rough (no die grinder work) and they usually don't crack there, but that block would never be used in any build leaving my shop.

I haven't had any issues with Powerbond dampers on the ones I've used. Other low cost dampers that given good service has been Pioneer with the snap ring and the Summit brand.
