Buying a new distributor is not going to help you one bit if you don't verify TDC and check the initial timing when the mechanical isn't coming in. Not one bit!

Get a piston stop and verify/re-mark TDC on the damper. Then use a light with vacuum advance disconnected and find the initial and total, or you WILL be sorry!
