I have 71 doors on my car which should be the same, and they do indeed have a crash bar the full length about 1/2 way up. I can't imagine how you could cut them out without either damaging the door...

My only contribution is related to tongue weight. Typical recommendation is 10-12% tongue weight. In my experience 12-14% is a safe bet. Too light and trailers can sway.
