I tightened down that plastic nut and it took out...

I tightened down that plastic nut and it took out all the slop. Maybe a quarter turn. I re melted the threads to prevent it backing out like the factory did.

How much play is permitted at the lower steering column shaft inside the engine compartment?
I have it disconnected from the rag joint and power steering box.
The shaft seems tight in the bearing...

Car is a 68 convertible. My right rear upper shock mount has worn/ rotted. I have a nickel sized hole and a lot of movement there.

I think so. lotsa bolts/ hardware to loosen. Beats pulling off the hood too I guess. But as said above, sometimes taking the "shortcuts" takes more time. I will try to re tackle this project over...
