id use a moisture barrier my 02¢

your going to cut the boards regardless of irregularities, just leave 1/8 gap...

the console in the car was previously red, and it and the test console seemed to take the paint well, so far i haven't had any issues and its been several months

I cleaned it well, scrubbed it with gasoline, yes gasoline, it took out any oils and residue and the gas itself evaporated.

I am probaly wrong, but i believe you remove that big ac suitcase, and weld a plate to cover the holes in the firewall, or they sell a piece to cover them with a cleaner look, like what non ac cars...
