rear end interchange help?

I am looking at putting a new rear end in my '64 Lemans convertible. currently it has the 8.2 in 10 bolt. From what I can gather these are weak and most people try to step up to at least a 8.5 in....

Thanks Pecos, that's good info. I'm not shooting for a complete dead on clone. If I had to choose between a pre 64 or post 64 389, which is the best. I haven't made it through my Pontiac V8 book yet....
