It could be leaking between the yoke and the pinion shaft splines. I've never dealt with that, but have heard about it happening. Also check to make sure your differential vent isn't clogged.

Too low can cause it to run lean or out. Slightly low shouldn't cause it though. As stated, your delivery system should keep it at the level that you set. Raising, or lowering, the fuel level changes...
