That is kinda weird. I have the same holes on a set of E heads Dave did for us and there ok. Hmmm. There would almost have to be a crack in the casting in that area. Sorry to see this happen to you....

A thermostat's purpose is to maintain cooling system pressure, The thermostat does not maintain system pressure. The Radiator cap is doing that job.
