I don’t think it was a dumb idea,I think it was a dumb idea to try and pass that off as a legitimate Pontiac seal.
I think that seal is for a totally different application that has the needed OD set...

Since there’s now been a good amount of grit flowing around in the motor once your tare it down inspect the piston skirts for imbedded grit and of course scratches.
Also pull the oil galley plugs...

Would also try and do a leak down test to see if any valves are not sealing well.
What cam do you have in the motor?

You should be fine, just after the first 2 or 3...
You should be fine, just after the first 2 or 3 full heat up and cool down sessions retorque the bolts .
When you do this loosen the water pump bolt a little, but no so much that you get a leak.
